The role involves evaluating Veterans who have filed disability claims. This includes reviewing medical records, taking a history, performing exams, reviewing labs/imaging, and submitting reports to the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA).
What are the steps in the Veteran disability claim process?
  1. The Veteran files a claim with the VBA.
  2. The VBA reviews the claim and may request an exam.
  3. The examiner reviews records and performs the exam.
  4. The examiner submits findings to the VBA.
  5. The VBA issues a decision to the Veteran.
What types of disability exams are there?
  • SHA: Transition exam for service members
  • General Medical: Within 1 year after service
  • Focused: Specific conditions
  • Gulf War: For qualifying deployments
  • Independent Medical Opinions: Cause/aggravation of conditions
What happens after the exam?
These exams are one-time evaluations. An examiner will not provide treatment, make referrals to other medical providers, or prescribe medicine. It is the responsibility of the Veteran to follow-up with their healthcare provider(s) for ongoing care.
